KEN SZUTU: AIR QUALITY HERO

Ken is the founder and director of Citizen Air Monitoring Network in Vallejo. He organized residents to set up this air monitoring network in 2016 after a Phillips 66 oil spill that sent more than 100 people to the emergency room in Vallejo. They started community-level monitoring before agencies paid much attention to community-level air quality and before AB 617 was enacted into law in 2017.

Mr. Szutu had also worked for more than six years with community members in defeating a cement plant proposal within the city boundary.

He is currently a member of the BAAQMD (Bay Area Air Quality Management District) Community Advisory Council of nine Bay Area counties. He represents Solano County on this council. His focus work is on community-engaged enforcement, community-engaged agenda setting, and community-level air quality monitoring.
